Teen fashion blogger Tavi Gevinson is so Rayanne, which is my name for all-around cool, badass chicks who just happen to also love Sassy. Why aren’t we friends? I’ll be your less cool pal who shops at JC Penny’s. And you’d convince me to dye my hair Crimson Glow.

Recently Tavi took up a Sassy-crusade on her enormously popular blog, The Style Rookie, calling out Seventeen on its bullshit and longing for another teen magazine like Sassy that “actively engages girls and women, addresses to their interests & concerns…and tells them they are smart & capable.”

Jezebel.com suggests that blogs like Tavi’s are carrying on the DIY spirit of Sassy and while I completely agree, I also believe that there’s a greater need for Sassy now than ever before. While the internet has made information more accessible to some girls, the rise of ‘sexting’ and social media has (unsurprisingly) provided more opportunities to slut-shame and victim blame teenage girls. The same double standards women have been dealing with since, oh forever, only now your tatas can be texted to the varsity football team in .02 seconds, while a Facebook page is constructed to remind the rest of the student body what a total slutbag whore you are.

In other words, haters still be hatin.

Tavi asked what a Sassy would look like today and I was reminded of the November ‘09 issue of Bust with Ellen Page and Alia Shawkat. Their interview was super smart and funny, dealing with everything from the female orgasm to legalized prostitution and I remember thinking how great it would be if they were on the cover of a teen magazine with the same kind of honesty and realness. Also, I can’t be the only one trying to Inception my way into Ellen Page’s pants. I mean, have you SEEN Whip It? It’s basically lesbian porn.

Honestly, I love the idea of bringing another Sassy into the world but I also long to see the day when it’s the norm. We don’t have to think of it as “another Sassy” because girls would be represented throughout all forms of media. And every pack of tampons would come with a free vibrator. And all Victoria’s Secret lingerie would be 50% off and come in all sizes. And Queen Latifah would be president. Of the earth.

Maybe someone should try making a Sassy-esque publication as a fanzine? Except more professional, to attract investors to keep it afloat, and possibly getting it into Barnes & Noble and the like (don’t they sell MRR at B&N?) or at least major independent bookstores… And then grow it into a pro-underground pro-girl quasi-mainstream-but-genuinely-cool magazine like Sassy was?

Just a suggestion. It’s good for kids (especially girls and queer kids) to have a “gateway publication” to progressive activism, DIY, and the like. Right now there seems to be nothing for that, and blogs just don’t really fill the void (and I haven’t heard of any blogs that try anyway!). And there were just too many girls at my high school who read Seventeen - I always rolled my eyes and muttered “what the hell happened to good magazines?” whenever I saw the latest issue’s cover…

I love this idea!

Man, I am so glad that I grew up with a Sassy magazine subscription and am still bitter I lent them to a friend that ended up tossing them when she moved away! I want to re-read them right now! There aren’t any magazines quite like Sassy, except, well, Bust! It is the only magazine I read excluding horrendous tabloids my co-workers leave around! I used to have a subscription to NYLON but that even was too much. I wish there was another Sassy out there for the younger generation. One that challenges them and reminds them they are capable of thinking on a level that is beyond ” How to lose twenty lbs in two weeks” or “Ten Things That Will Drive Him Wild In The Sack!” Give me a fucking break. Their music reviews and beauty segments were so fantastic too. OH GOD! I MISS IT! So, I approve of everything mentioned above. Immensely.
